Using the Joomla 1.6+ ACL to Customise the Administrator Experience

One of the common problems for newbies administrators and clients of Joomla websites is the complexity of the administrator console, or to be clearer, the large amount of options available to the user. By default all admins get access to everything, including user manager, configuration options, menu manager, components, articles, categories, featured, module manager, plugin manager, template manager and a host of other options. Lots of people get quite a shock when they see the Joomla Administrator for the first time. There are just so many options. Three problems here:

a) Information overload
b) Many clients don’t need access to half of the functions offered by the administrator
c) The less access you give, the less chance of a user breaking something by using a function they shouldn’t have!

Fix by setting the backend user to Manager and then selectively allowing each page they require based on the component.
